How much sleep should my 8 month old be getting?
My 8 month old sleeps 11-12 hours at night and I shoot for between 3-4 hours of napping during the day. Does this seem right? He used to sleep more during the night, but he's getting up earlier lately. His naps have gotten a little longer, though. Thanks in advance for the help!
I think 11-12 hours at night and 3-4 hours of napping in the daytime is very good. If he's getting up earlier and taking longer naps, its still balancing out, and getting the same amount of sleep, which is perfectly fine. If you would like to check out more, you can go to

Good luck with the baby!

He probably doesn't need so much nap time during the day. Try taking a little time away from the nap and see if he'll sleep longer during the night.
Good luck!

8 Months
Your baby may be sleeping through the night for about 11 hours. She'll still be taking one and a half to two and a half hour naps. After about 6 months, the baby's sleep patterns won't change much. Naps will get slightly shorter and parents and child will have restful sleep throughout the night.

that sounds fine.
from what i know, kids in elementary school should sleep ten hours a night, late elementary school to early middle school, nine hours, and then eight hours as a teenager, and adults usually get seven hours. but i don't know about babies, but that sounds fine.

Sounds good here. My son is almost 8 months and he sleeps around 10 hours at night and two naps a day for about 1.5-2 hours at a time.

He`s growing everyday so he needs his sleep to grow probably but at the next checkup I would ask my Dr. just to make sure!

If he's getting up earlier, he probably isn't needing quite as much sleep. At that age, my 4th child (now 1) went to bed around 8:30, woke up about 8, and took a single 2 hr nap. So that's about 13 1/2 hrs sleep, less than what you're aiming for. But every baby is different.

They're pretty good at setting their own needs for sleep. You can fiddle with the schedule but how long they sleep is pretty much up to them. My 8 mo old had the worst sleeping patterns, and did not start sleeping through the night until about 11 months. Getting colds and teething really mess them up! Now he sleeps from about 10PM until 8AM (10 hours) then 2-4 hours during the day.
