Insomnia advise please?

I'm a chronic insomniac and have been working with my DR. on the problem for the past 8 years. Any ideas on what can help. Here's what hasn't. Gave up caffine, bedroom used for sleeping only (no tv), regular exercise, routine bedtime rituals, not eating after a certain hour, hot bath 90 min before bed time. Making my bed the most comfortable place I know. Hypnosis (cured my smoking habit so I thought I'd try). Fan on in bedroom to drown out noises that could wake me up when I do fall asleep, aroma therapy, calming music, and reading books. OTC's like including tylonol pm, and Nyquil. (works for a coupled days then doesn't) RX such as Lunesta, Ambien and Rozerem (to mention a few) all with no results. The only thing that gives relief at all is Xanex, but it's controlled and after 5 years on it, my tolerance is very high and it's not working well anymore. Any suggestions? I need to get some sleep! Thanks
**oh, and I forgot to mention all the herbal products I tried. Please help.
I asked the dr about a sleep study, but she says it's not sleep apnea, so it wouldn't help. I asked for other benzos and she says I'll have the same tolerance. I'm on both an antidepressant and an antihistamine, neither of which helped. Some great answers though. As for the pot, if it could be prescribed I absolutely would try, but at this time, it'd cost me my career. We have manditory testing at my job. Oh yeah, I've done the graveyard shift too. Same issue only worse. I know it seems I have an answer for almost anything, but keep trying please. 8 years is far too many and I'm fed up. Thanks so much!!

You might just be a night person. My dad works night most of the time so my family and I are up at night. But I have turned my insomnia around before. All I did was stay up all night and go to bed at noon or one in the afternoon. After a couple of days I was getting up early in the morning and going to bed at night.

I'm 18 and have had insomnia for about 12 years. I am also home schooled so I have a very flexible schedule that helped a lot.

And it's 3:30 in the morning and I have been up since noon.

Have you had a sleep study done? I had chronic insomnia for years; had a sleep study done and it was determined that I had sleep apnea. Now, I put the oxygen on before bed and I actually do sleep

Believe it or not, eating celery has a soporific effect. Plus, it's low-cal, so who cares about eating it at bedtime?

You might also look at a sublingual Melatonin, which is absorbed quicker than tablets. Source Naturals makes a good product, in numerous flavors.

Best of luck to you . . .

There is something that is bothering at subconscious level. you just have to figure it out with or without psychiatrist help.

Most of the time in American society, money problems, anxiety, fear etc play key role in keeping you up at night.

I had that problem for two decades.

    Hope it helps.

    Andi,

    Tried weed?

    Does it for some folks.

You may be in luck if you live in California…the docs there write prescriptions for it like any other drug, and you take it to a dispensary to fill it. Dispensaries can be hard to find in some locations.

Melatonin is a pineal hormone produced naturally in the body.

It regulates sleep and is postulated to maintain human circadian rhythms (body's clock).

It decreases as we age and the decrease is associated with some sleep disorders — usually not in younger persons.

However, it is an effective sleep aid when pharmacy grade melatonin is taken in proper doses.

I typically take 6 to 9 mg on an empty stomach prior to bed time and enjoy deep restful sleep.

These results happened slowly over time and it was not a 'one shot' cure.

Have a look at http://www.melatonin.com if you would like more information and sweet dreams.

TWO suggestions: WARM MILK then a GOOD BOOK(in bed of course) read until you begin to nod off, then shut off your light and sleep soundly or you can leave the light on and simply close your eyes when you can no longer read.

As It is 4:30 A.M. –I THINK I WILL TAKE MY OWN ADVICE:)

It's interesting to note that only the benzodiazepine class of drugs (Xanex) has shown any promise. Can you try another drug from that class?

Lunesta and Ambien are both non-benzodiazepine drugs.

Has your doctor tried antidepressants or antihistamines?

From there you can try acupuncture and meditation.

    Good Luck

Have warm milk before you sleep or watch tv till you fall asleep. You could also knock yourself out every night (haha). The oldest women in the world sleeps for a whole day and then stays awake for another. You could try this as im sure you would be very tired by the end

Insomnia is often caused by fear, stress, anxiety, medications, herbs, caffeine, depression or sometimes for no apparent reason. Make sure your bedroom is quiet and dark. Soak a tablespoon of mint leaves in a cup of water for an hour, drink every night. Check out http://useinfo-insomnia.blogspot.com/ for more info
