Whats the best way to get better sleep at night if you have insomnia?
I am 19 years old and I can't seem to fall asleep at night. My parents said I had this problem since I was a baby. I try to go to bet at like 11:00 but I can't fall asleep until like 3 or 4 in the morning. Could this be insomnia?

Are you tired? Do you have a sleep routine? when you fall asleep at 3 or 4, what time do you wake up? do you feel rested? are you in school? can you change your classes to different times? I keep my room, quiet, dark with blackout shades, cool, comfortable sheets. sometimes I fall asleep w TV on, but learned to use sleep timer. Have you tried Benadryl, 25mg? Do you drink a lot of bev w caffiene? Mtn Dew, or energy drinks? or coffee/espresso? Do you exercise? there are sleep meds, Ambien CR, Restoril, Xanax, even Unisom otc, Do you drink alcohol before going to sleep. sometimes this has an opposite effect. Talk with doc about your situation and hopefully you can get some rest.



Try taking Melatonin.
But you really should see a doctor who specializes in sleep disorders.

Some people just have sleep cycles that differ from the majority. Since your parents say that you have always been this way, you could just be one of these people. Speak to your doctor about this issue. You could need a sleep study. You could have a problem that can be treated. Sometimes people can actually be born with sleep disorders.

There are many things that a person with insomnia can do to fall asleep faster. One of these things is sleeping pills, but I don't recommend those because you can become immune to them after a period of time.
Here are some tips on how to get to sleep faster:
-don't analyze things while you are sleeping. If you're constantly thinking about your day, or about future plans, that distracts you from sleeping. Try to keep your mind clear of thoughts.
-decrease tension. Don't think "oh no, if I don't get to sleep right now, my day will be ruined!" That keeps you awake even longer!
-try to establish a regular routine. Set your alarm every morning at the same time. Your body will get used to waking up at this time, and you will be required to go to sleep earlier.

I personally use an over the counter sleep aid. But there is a risk of dependence. Exercise is always good. If it's an occasional thing just try not to nap the next day. But if it is most nights you might want to consult a doctor.

there are tons of things that cause sleepless nights, stress, diet, emotion connections, financial issues, what your habits are, the amount of activity you have been through in the course of a day.
Take a look at what your daily habits are and perhaps try to change them. Do a work out in the AM, drink lots of liquids and eat fruit during your course of the day. Take some time to meditate. And most importantly understand that your body needs rest to be healthy. Try to clear your mind by realizing you have done everything possible in the waking hours of the day to make your life better. You'll sleep much better as a guiltless conscious sleeps soundest.

Like the others have said, there could be lots of reasons. If you've had this problem since you were little, I wonder if it could be a food that's common in your diet that causes problems for you. Sometimes little food intolerances can cause big problems. Especially dairy products. If you really want to test this out, trying taking a food group out of your diet for a while (like more than 2 weeks) and see if there's any difference.
