How to reduce the stress caused by insomnia?
I'm asking this on behalf of my friend who is some what suffering from insomnia and this is really affecting her stress rate. Her mom always asks her to sleep at 7pm when she isn't tired and she ends up staring into mid air blankly in the middle of the night. And this is really adding to her stress rate. Please help by giving some suggestions >.< thank you.
Hi,
You can find something useful to do.
Anyway you can not sleep! Then at least find something useful to do and the pleasure for having done something helpful to other people helps balancing stress.
Another good effect is that when you do something else than usual you might forget about your casual problems which do not let you feel how tired you really are. This is the best way to get easily asleep!

Can staying up late every night develop insomnia?
I have been drinking a 6 hour power shot at 11:30 each night for about a week. I go to sleep at 3-4. If I continue staying up late, will insomnia develop? I'm studying and doing homework for school, but I need to know if I have a chance of developing insomnia due to my need for studying and staying up late.
Causes of Secondary Insomnia
Secondary insomnia is often a symptom of an emotional, neurological, or other medical disorder, or of another sleep disorder.
The emotional disorders that can cause secondary insomnia include depression, anxiety, and posttraumatic stress disorder. Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease are examples of common neurological disorders that can cause secondary insomnia.
A number of other diseases and conditions can cause secondary insomnia, including:
Conditions that cause chronic pain, such as arthritis and headache disorders
Conditions that cause difficulty breathing, such as asthma or heart failure
Overactive thyroid
Gastrointestinal disorders, such as heartburn
Stroke
Sleep disorders, such as restless legs syndrome, also can cause secondary insomnia. In addition, secondary insomnia can be a side-effect of certain medicines or commonly used substances, including:
Caffeine or other stimulants
Tobacco or other products with nicotine
Alcohol or other sedatives
Certain asthma medicines (for example, theophylline) and some allergy and cold medicines
Beta blockers (medicines used to treat heart conditions)
Causes of Primary Insomnia
Primary insomnia is not due to another medical or emotional condition and typically occurs for periods of at least 1 month. Whether some people are born with a greater chance of having insomnia is not clear yet. A number of life changes can trigger primary insomnia, including:
Major or long-lasting stress and emotional upset
Travel or other factors such as work schedules that disrupt your sleep routine
Even after these causes go away, the insomnia might stay. Trouble sleeping may persist because of habits formed to deal with the lack of sleep. These habits include taking naps, worrying about sleep, or going to bed early.
How do I use Roman Chamomile Essential Oil to treat insomnia?
Someone gave me a bottle of it for my insomnia, but I don't know what to do with it. Do I ingest it? Smell it? Put it on my skin? I am at a loss as to what to do.
Not to dig on the previous poster, but since when does GNC know anything about aromatherapy? Even if they attempted to answer your question, I wouldn't trust them in a million years to know anything about essential oils. They specialize in vitamins and chemical suppliments, not aromatherapy.
Anyway.. how you use it is a personal preference (except ingest it, do not ingest it!). You can mix it with a carrier oil (you probably have olive or another pure plant oil in your kitchen) and apply it to your skin. You can heat it in an oil warmer (the kind with a tea light candle under a bowl of water), heat it on a radiator in a bowl of water, put it on a cotton ball next to your bed, put a drop or two on your pillowcase, or put a bunch of drops in a small spray bottle with water and spray it on your pillow (shake well before each use)..
The key is that you want to smell it as you're falling asleep. The aroma should be subtle, not overpowering, and how you choose to use it is really up to you. You can even smell it directly out of the bottle before you lay down, but it will work better if you use a smaller amount over a longer period of time.
The cotton ball next to the bed is really the easiest, in my opinion.. it works well, and if for some reason it's too strong, or you decide you don't like the smell, you can just throw the cotton ball away. If it works well, just add another drop or two the next night.
Is it possible that Magnesium supplements can cause insomnia?
I have been taking magnesium citrate (100mg twice a day) at 9 am and 3 pm. After 4 days on it a developed insomnia for about 3 days in a row. I am not sure if it is magnesium, but I have taken on 2 different weeks and it has been the same story. It is supposed that magnesium helps with insomnia, but I am not sure in my case. Any comments?
Magnesium definiciency and overdose symptoms are the same. Try a lesser dose - the RDA is 6mg/kg of body weight. (Ie - if you're 100 lbs which is 45.45 kg, you would need 272 mg.) Remember that you also get Mg from food sources, and the FDA doesn't require Mg to be listed on the list (some good sources are milk, beans, avocados, yogurt, spinach…etc.)
How bad can insomnia get if you don't take control of it?
My friend, who is 16, he is a really hyper talkative guy and outgoing and I never knew til yesterday that he takes pills for insomnia. (LMAO. No wonder) And so I was wondering can insomnia go away or does it stay with you forever if you don't take control of it?
It can screw up your sleep pattern. Make you stay awake all night, not able to fall asleep until you're really tired, which for some people makes the sleep pattern highly irregular.
Whats the best way to get better sleep at night if you have insomnia?
I am 19 years old and I can't seem to fall asleep at night. My parents said I had this problem since I was a baby. I try to go to bet at like 11:00 but I can't fall asleep until like 3 or 4 in the morning. Could this be insomnia?
*Bed
Sorry I didn't realize I had a typo.
Are you tired? Do you have a sleep routine? when you fall asleep at 3 or 4, what time do you wake up? do you feel rested? are you in school? can you change your classes to different times? I keep my room, quiet, dark with blackout shades, cool, comfortable sheets. sometimes I fall asleep w TV on, but learned to use sleep timer. Have you tried Benadryl, 25mg? Do you drink a lot of bev w caffiene? Mtn Dew, or energy drinks? or coffee/espresso? Do you exercise? there are sleep meds, Ambien CR, Restoril, Xanax, even Unisom otc, Do you drink alcohol before going to sleep. sometimes this has an opposite effect. Talk with doc about your situation and hopefully you can get some rest.
My medication causes insomnia what can I do?
I have to take medication that causes insomnia and I hardly get any sleep. I usually sleep for about 4 hours a day and until my prescription runs out there is nothing I can do about it. Is there anyway to make myself sleepy?
Take the natural supplement Melatonin. I just took it 10 minutes ago and I'm already falling asleep. Good luck.
How do I get help for insomnia?
I am suffering from severe insomnia. I went to the doctor to see if I could get a prescription to help me sleep. She refused to give me anything and she just told me to take some unisom. What should I do?
See a different doc. I've had insomnia for over 40 years. It began when I was 16. I am now 57. My "sleep clock" is broken. My insomnia story is at http://www.fms-help.com/insomnia.htm A list of things I've tried for sleep (unisom was one of them) is at http://www.fms-help.com/sleep.htm A list of things I use now is at http://www.fms-help.com/what.htm I do get restorative sleep almost every night now, thanks to a caring doc who worked with me to find the right meds for my problem. (Doctor of internal medicine) Insomnia can wreck your health and immune system. Find a better doc! My guess is that your doc doesn't have this problem so doesn't understand. My doc has to take sleep meds himself, so he understands. I always take the least amount of any med to get a positive effect and avoid any unpleasant side effect, such as next day drowsiness. Use a pill splitter (cheap gadget from Walmart or any pharmacy).
Can you still have depression induced insomnia after depression?
i used to be severely depressed. i didn't do any school work. i would cut, never eat, and just lay in my bed with the light off, music on and cry. sometimes i still feel like my depression isn't completely gone, but previously while depressed i had insomnia, could i still be an insomniac even though i am no long depressed?
Of course you can, but you really need to go to your doctor. There is medicine that can help you. I hope you feel better soon. God Bless You!
what is the relation between insomnia and appetite loss?
I have been complaining from insomnia for almost a weak, I realized a drastic restrain in my appetite, I barely eat anymore. Does it have any influence on my apetite on the long run?
I just read an article in "Newsweek" about women and sleep. Appetite loss is definitely a symptom when the body is sleep deprived. The article primarily focused on why women so often have sleeping problems. It varies from stress, hormonal changes, to yes…depression. If I were you, I'd set up an appointment with your doctor. If nothing else, they can set you up with a sleep clinic perhaps. It is really cool. They hook you up to machines and monitor your sleep patterns and can totally diagnose what is happening! Once they can focus on your sleep, then they can focus on the appetite. Just don't let it go on too long. Ok? Ok!!
How do you deal with insomnia while taking Tamiflu?
I came down with a particularly nasty strain of the flu that landed me in the hospital with my throat swollen shut. The doctor put me on Tamiflu 3 days ago…. and I haven't been able to sleep since. Every time I try to lie down, my mind suddenly starts racing and I can't sleep. I know that insomnia is one of the side effects…. is there a way to counter it? Has anyone ever taken it and dealt with the same problem?
insomnia (sleeplessness) is due to stress, dietary and medical
problems. By making small lifestyle changes like having a fixed
daily routine, relaxing and eating properly, insomnia can be
cured. I found the information at http://tinyurl.com/jfzpz useful
for getting sleep.
How do you beat chronic insomnia?
I have had insomnia on and off for years. Only recently did it become chronic.I am wondering if there are any good methods around to beat it.
I would prefer not to take drugs.
Set your alarm to one time (the time you want to wake up each morning) and follow it strictly. Your body should adjust to the new wake up time and let you go to sleep when it needs to.
To help you get to sleep:
1) during the day get lots of sunlight
2) exercise in the morning
3) don't have any caffeine. be sure to drink plenty of water throughout the day.
4) take a warm bath and have a warm glass of milk or cup of chamomile tea before sleep
5) don't watch tv or use the computer for at least a half hour before sleep. Instead do something in a dimmer light.
6) don't have a big meal before going to sleep but also don't go to sleep on an empty stomach. have a small snack, such as yogurt (which also contains tryptophan).
7) make sure there is no noise, no light, smells fine and the room temperature is a cool 65 degrees and your comfortable in bed.
Also, go to sleep at the same time each night. Its important to establish a sleep schedule.
What is an appetite suppressant that I can take at night without getting insomnia from it?
Trying to lose weight like so many of us. One of my main problems is night compulsive eating. I don't want to feel nauseous, like some appetite suppressants can do. And I don't want it to keep me up (I'm already taking something for insomnia, and the last thing I need is to make it worse.)
Don't give obnoxious comments that judge me for wanting help with losing weight. It's OBVIOUSLY not helpful.
Try eating hard-boiled egg whites. They keep you full throughout the night.
Can constant boredom and no socializing create insomnia?
I am new to this area, I know no one, I read a lot and surf the web, no tv; I have problems sleeping and eating. I cannot eat in the morning. Is this insomnia and loss of appetite connected with constant boredom?
bmac you are an idiot. I am not complaining about how things are so bad for me, I'm asking a question as to whether this is why I have no appetite and insomnia.
everyone, I don't think I'm depressed, or if I am, I'm handling it quite well.
And I am a Christian and read my bible daily.
I don't think its the socializing, i think its more the fact that you are on the web a lot and not really exercising.
How can you get to sleep with insomnia?
I have had insomnia for about 2 years and it is nearly impossible for me to sleep. I have to get up to work at 6 a.m., but don't get to sleep till -at best- 5:30. Does anyone know a way for me to get more sleep?
This question is awfully hard to answer without lifestyle details, however, it definitly seems that you have a pretty bad case of insomnia. While Im not an insomniac, my friend used to be and he would just not sleep for a couple days and then just collapse.
The norm of what you can do is take sleeping pills, avoid caffiene consumption, and try incest in your pillow or something like that. If you have a stressful lifestyle then you should pickup meditation to get rid of it and allow sleep. A visit of the family practitioner is also something you should do.
Now what my friend did was he searched up the internet after being on pills for awhile and found "brainwave technology" soundtracks, now I dont know if it was something about him that built well with this but the result was that he essentially "cured" insomnia.
But anyways, my advice is
1. Do simple lifestyle changes (no caffiene, no eating past 6, maybe a warm bath, get relaxed, etc.)
2. Try meditation or yoga if you're stressful
3. See a Doctor
4. Try "brainwave technology" , I only know that it worked for my friend, but I also belive it has a 60 day guarantee.
Is insomnia common in the 1st trimester of pregnancy?
I haven't been able to get adequate sleep for two weeks now and I'm 9 weeks pregnant. Is there any positive relationship between insomnia and early pregnancy? I have no nausea or vomiting, no urinary frequency so far. I am very tired during days but wide awake during nights. All non-medication methods of dealing with the sleep problem that I tried have been unsuccessful so far.
I don't know if it's common (most women complain of being too tired in the first trimester), but it does happen. I sometimes experienced what you described, being exhausted during the day but not being able to fall asleep at night, but not so often that it was a problem. There might be some medications you can take with your doctor's approval if it's really bad. I know Benedryl is OK to take during pregnancy and that stuff will knock you out cold, but talk to your doctor first.
How can I cure my insomnia without sleep meds?
For years I've had insomnia. I can't even remember the last time I fell asleep within an hour.
Ok, here we go… you asked.
I've had insomnia for years and my main problem is my mind wont stop thinking. If you are ready to sleep, willing to put forth some effort and give it some time(a couple weeks of this routine and 1-2 hours per night at first), you can sleep without drugs =)
First-Look up sleep hygene and make sure you are following as many of these recommendations as possible like: no caffeine/stimulants, keep the room dark, cool and quiet, turn off your phone, get a loud fan that will drone out other noises, watch what you eat/drink for dinner or late night snacks, make a list of what you need to do tomorrow so you dont stay up thinking about it, stretch, brush teeth, warm shower, etc….
Second-Find a tv show that is slightly entertaining(too much and you will be winding up vs. winding down) and somewhat dull( too dull and you will not stay focused on the show), Fraiser works for me. Record 2-3 episodes for each night or find a second show so you have at least an hour and a half worth of shows to watch and wind down. Do all of your sleep hygene before climbing into bed and starting the show.
Then keep the volume at a low level and stay focused on the show. If your mind wanders, when you notice this, re-direct your attention back to the show. After 30-45 mins, you should start feeling sleepy. This is where it takes effort, do not turn off the tv yet. Instead, turn the volume down a bit, lie down and close your eyes. Make sure you can still hear the show and keep your focus on what they are saying. After 15-20 mins, the volume will become loud to you as you relax more, so turn the volume down a little more. Now keep listening to the show until you start drifting off to sleep. You will probably wake up to the tv after a breif nap and now I can turn off the tv here and fall asleep. You may want to turn the volume down a little more before turning the tv completely off or even be ok with leaving the tv on all night( if the light doesnt bother you). Once you notice that you woke up from being asleep, you can usually fall back asleep easily.
This method takes some practice and focus but it works! It will bring your mind to a relaxing state and also help you stay asleep throughout the night because you wont be physically falling asleep with your mind still being active. Good luck!
Can you think of any songs about insomnia or simply not being able to sleep?
I am trying to put together a mix CD about insomnia and/or not being able to sleep for my Mom, who is suffering from trauma induced insomnia. I am looking for pretty much any genre of music, although she's a baby boomer, so she's not much of a death metal gal, if you know what I mean. Thanks in advance for your help!
the song brainstew by greenday says "im having trouble trying to sleep"? haha but what about some songs to help her fall asleep?
Maybe…
lullabye by shawn mullins
lullaby by jack johnson and matt costa..which is actually about trying to fall asleep.
How can I easily get rid of Insomnia using household objects?
I have insomnia. N doctor told me so, but I am smart enough to figure it out on my own. No matter how early I try to go to sleep, I never get to sleep before 2 AM. Need help. I don't want to go out of my way and it can't be too expensive.
to beat insomnia, try the following sleep aid tips
* When you get up, try to keep a schedule like, eat, take medicine and go to bed, etc.
* Try to establish a relaxing before-sleep ritual, like taking warm bath, having light snack or reading for 10 minutes. This can let your body become informed that it is already near bed time.
* When sleepy try to go to bed, get out of bed when not sleeping.
* Have a regular exercise, it is best to exercise in the late afternoon, about six hours before bedtime.
* Around bedtime, try to avoid caffeine, alcohol and smoking.
* Don't nap, naps are best taken in the mid-afternoon.
But if insomnia persist, consult a doctor.
How to control or stop insomnia?
I have really bad insomnia sometimes. There are some nights when I stay up the entire time, I develop a pounding headache, but just can't seem to get to sleep. There are also some times when I don't sleep for 24+ hours. I don't know how this comes on or how to control it! I don't like taking medicine unless there is nothing left to do, so I prefer any natural remedy. Any advice?
The only natural remedy is TAKE IT EASY!Maybe you are stressed…Maybe you drink a lot of cup of coffees in a day…Maybe you think much more than useful…It's useless torture yourself this way…I suggest you to talk with a psychologist…It will be a right way to value yourself and understand why you cannot sleep…And believe me, talking with a specialist is the only natural and non invasive remedy…
