Sleep Apnea and Breathing

Obstructive sleep apnea is also called sleep apnea. Obstructive means there is something that is blocking your airway when you lie down to sleep. If you find it difficult to sleep, that you are gasping for breath, and you are always snoring, a sleep machine could give you results that you need to get the rest you need without interrupting your breathing patterns. The airway passages that are sealed or partially sealed as you sleep cause you to stop breathing. As you stop breathing you are adding stress on your heart, on your body and you will not feel rested in the morning.

A breathing machine can help you get the air you need, the oxygen that you need, and the rest you need to keep you going. The signs of sleep apnea include those of always being tired, that you are irritable because you are not sleeping good, and you have difficultly focusing your eyes, or your mind when concentrating during the day.

As you are unable to get the air you need, the oxygen you need to replenish your body you are putting your self at risk for additional medical conditions and problems. If you don’t treat your sleep apnea, or your obstructed airways you could have a heart attack, you could have a stroke, you could have high blood pressure and these conditions can also lead to diabetes. Associated with all of these symptoms are being overweight, and stressful work or family life.

Therapy can aid your situation. You can use a breathing machine or a dental item to open your airways. Using a breathing machine is going to give you additional higher oxygen levels. The dental item is going to open your jaw so you don’t have an obstruction. There are also over the counter medications, such as the breath right strips and similar items, that can open your passages so you can breath all night long, and get the rest you need. If over the counter medications and items don’t work, you could seek the help of your family doctor, take a sleep test, and consider a surgical procedure that will correct the obstruction and then open the airways while you are sleeping.

How do you cure sleep apnea without a breathing machine?
My boyfriend has no insurance. He cannot afford a machine. He wakes tired from this condition and he is a carpenter. Hard work with power tools. I worry about him.

My husband has the same thing and we tried everything but unfortunately the only thing that truly works is the machine. try finding a doctor that will work out a payment plan with him :)

Losing weight is the only long-term solution, outside of the CPAP.

you can't cure sleep apnea even with a cpap machine. what you can do is get a uppp operation by a ent specialist or lose weight and do not drink alcohol before sleep. do not sleep flat on your back either. those things will help but you are right to be concerned.

I do not think there is a cure, but studies show that learning to play a didgeridoo can help to ease the severity of sleep apnea. Check out the accompanying link.

Look, sleep apnea is serious stuff, and could lead to major illness. Try to find a free clinic, or reset your priorities. But he should be diagnosed in a sleep lab and the CPAP system is, by far, the best solution.
OK, so you don't or think you cant follow this advice? Then go to the pharamcy and buy a pack of those tape devices designed to spread the nostril channels for easier breathing. Get him some nasal spray like Afrin or Sinex but be careful, frequent usage can cause a rebound effect that could only complicate this. In the end, he really needs CPAP.

Sleep apnea seems to be the new disease of the year. It was fibromyalgia for a couple years and adult ADD and ADHD.

This year it is the sleep apnea. I am sure some people suffer from this. But, I also think it is being over diagnosed as the others mentioned above have been.

I was diagnosed with it also. Thru tests of my own I discovered the problem was my PILLOW. I can only sleep with one pillow under my head, not two or three. Problem solved…………..

I would look at your boyfriend's symptoms again. If he truly has sleep apnea, he should be able to get help some where.

the cpap machine therapist and respiralogist said there is no medical cure for sleep apnea. sleep apnea is caused by relaxation of throat muscle. avoid taking sedative medication and exercise more.

My husband and his cousin have sleep apnea. While my husband's isn't bad enough for him to need the machine, his cousin's is. Those who need the machine have it pretty bad and it would probably be best for him to try to get some type of insurance. I know this may sound extreme but maybe he should go to the Department of Public Welfare and try and apply for free or low cost medical coverage because Sleep Apnea can be a dangerous thing. On the flip side my husband lost weight and his bouts of sleep apnea have decreased. If your boyfriend is overweight, he should also try losing some of the extra pounds and this may help.
